Bands

The bands that played the valley’s basements, halls and back lots, with everything in the archive about each one.

  • Black-and-white flash photo: three young women pose against a cinderblock wall painted with big flowers, one holding a bass guitar and one holding drumsticks.

    Ditch Lilies

    Band · 1991–1996

A three-piece started by Josie Park, Ana Cruz and Wren Delgado in a garage on Mill Street. They made their own zine, Pull the Weeds, and gave it away at every show.
  • Black-and-white photo: three teenage musicians sit on stacked feed sacks in front of a rural feed store, two with guitars and one with drumsticks.

    Feed Store Saints

    Band · 1987–1994

Four kids from the Harlow feed store who learned three chords in the back lot and played every all-ages room in the valley. Their tape Live at the Grange sold out its first hundred copies in a week.
  • Faded color photo: four young musicians stand in a wheat field at dusk with a tall grain elevator behind them.

    Grain Elevator

    Band · 1995–2003

A slow, quiet four-piece who asked audiences to sit down. At their first Grange show the hall turned off the kitchen fridge so the songs could be heard.
  • Color flash photo: about ten young people crowd onto the porch of an old wooden house with trombones and trumpets, laughing.

    Potluck Riot

    Band · 1997–2005

Eight people, a four-piece horn section and a van that broke down in every town. Ska-punk for church basements and backyard parties, and the last band to play the Grange before it closed for repairs.
