Static Hum

Black-and-white flash photo: a crowd of teenagers with raised arms at a packed basement show, a singer with a guitar at the back under string lights.

Twenty years of all-ages shows, photocopied.

Flyers, zines, tapes and photos from the basements, grange halls and back lots of the Harlow Valley, 1985 to 2005, lent by the people who made them.

    Photograph · June 1995

Leaving for a weekend of shows in three towns. The van was borrowed from Ana’s uncle and came back with a new dent.
  • Flyer on pink paper: Feed Store Saints and Ditch Lilies at the Grange Hall, Friday April 9, all ages, three dollars, in bold black letters with a halftone photo of a guitarist and a hand-drawn lightning bolt.

    Flyer · April 9, 1993

Dee cut the big letters out of a seed catalog and copied two hundred of these at the library, ten cents a page. The show drew 212 people, the most the Grange ever let in.
  • A clear cassette labeled Live at the Grange beside its J-card with a photocopied photo of a band and the words Feed Store Saints.

    Live at the Grange

    Cassette · 1993

Recorded from the soundboard at the April 9 show. One hundred copies, dubbed in real time in Tom Avila’s bedroom.
  • Zine cover: Mill St. Mumble number 4, with a big halftone close-up of a laughing face and doodled stars.

    Zine · 1994

The issue with the review of the Grange show: “212 people and nobody broke anything.”
  • Flyer on green paper: a cartoon skateboarder flying over a half-pipe, with lettering for Potluck Riot and Grain Elevator at the skatepark, Saturday July 14, 2 pm, free.

    Flyer · July 14, 2001

An afternoon show on the deck of the half-pipe. The city loaned a generator and the fire department came to watch.
  • Zine cover: Pull the Weeds, a collage of a garden glove holding a microphone among cut-out weeds and flowers.

    Pull the Weeds

    Zine · 1992

The band’s own zine, given away at shows: lyrics, collages and a page called “How to start a band in a town with no music store.”
  • Black-and-white photo: a teenage skateboarder flies above a homemade plywood ramp behind a feed store while friends watch from hay bales.

    Photograph · August 10, 1991

Skaters and bands shared the back lot most Saturdays that summer. The ramp was built from the feed store’s old pallets.
  • A smoky gray cassette with a typewritten label reading Silo beside its J-card with a photo of a grain elevator at dusk and the words Grain Elevator.

    Silo

    Cassette · 1998

Eight slow songs. The J-card asks you to play it “at night, quietly, in a car.”

Everything in the boxes

We copied two hundred of these at the library and stapled them to every pole on Main Street. The Grange let us in because my aunt ran the Tuesday potluck.
